Attractive Effort by Lady Furst in Woodville Handicap

Open Sprint Won by Mittie

Vascones was Besi Juvenile

The Woodville District Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was opened yesterday under perfect weather conditions and there was a very good attendance. The track, freshened up as a result of rain earlier in the week, was in splendid order and the racing was interesting throughout. The totalisator investments amounted to £10,656 10s, as compared with £10,992 10s on the off day of the autumn meeting in 1937, which opened on a Saturday. The principal event, the Woodville Handicap, was won by Lady Furst, with Dungarvan and Seigmund in the places, and the open sprint was won by Mittie from Florence Mills and Lucullus Lad.

Easy for Halley After running up into second place at the half mile, Halley, carrying the Ormond colours, look charge at the bottom of the straight and he went on to win the Maiden Plate by over three lengths. Cuisinier, one of the last to leave the mark, finished fast into second place, beating Prediction, who had had the run of the race, by the best part of two lengths. Parian, having his first race, was in front for most of the way, but he failed to see it out, being beaten into fifth place, tho fourth horse being Barabbas. The favourite was Brazil, but after getting away first from wide out, ho drifted back to seventh place,! where ho finished. Brazil, Richelieu Pearl, Parian were first to break the line, but Parian quickly ran up to follow Brazil into the straight, followed by Prediction, Cuddler, Richelieu Pearl and Barabbas. From then on there was only one in it, but had Cuisinier been closer at the home turn he would have made it harder for the winner. Good Thing for Mataroa

Racing in the colours of Mr. A. H. Burt, Mataroa followed his Pahiatua win with a victory in the Oringi Highweight, and he scored decisively from Great Quex, with the favourite, Bumble, beaten into third place.

They had not gone far before Great Quex and Twilight Song sorted themselves out and, going into the back stretch, they were three lengths ahead of Dancing Flame, with another three lengths to Mataroa. The leaders drew further away near the five but then the gap began to close and at the four Mataroa aud Ebb and Flow were im-. proving. Twilight Song cried enough crossing the top and the order into the straight was Great Quex, Mataroa, Bumble and Ebb and Flow. Then Mata- j

roa took charge and went on to win by I three lengths from Great Quex, with a ( length to Bumble. Dancing Flame was j fourth and Ebb and Flow and Linguist were next. Lady Turst Beats Dungarvan Dungarvan was favourite for the Woodville Handicap, but Lady Furst beat him into second place, the margin at the post being a couple of lengths. Lady Furst early took the lead, but Dungarvan was well placed and his chances 01 victory were not improved when he displaced Lady Furst in the lead over three furlongs from home. There was a great tusslo for second money and Dungarvan just beat Siegmund, with Big Dook, Play On and Master Cyklon a little over a length away.

The early order was Lady Furst from Silver River, Master Cyklon, Play On and Dungarvan. The first half mile was run in 53 1-5 and except that Dungarvan moved forward there was no alteration going down the back. The first six took them 1.18 1-5 and running to the three Dungarvan went to tho front, turning for home a couple of lengths ahead of Lady Furst, with Play On, Galteemore, Hunting Cat and Good Sun next. Lady Furst then ran past Dungarvan and on to win decisively and Dungarvan had to do his best to withstand the challenge by Siegmund, the margin being a short head. Big Dook, with a run on tho fence, got up to' beat Play On, with Master Cyklon and Tiger Gain close up next. The last mile was run in 1.40 1-5. Vascones Sees it Out

Counter was favourite for tho Sapling Stakes and with a late run on the fence he got up to within two lengths of the winner, Vascones, who led from end to end and who won attractively. Portal, Caution aud Lively Lady were slow away and when t he field had settled down Vascones was showing tho way, followed by Newbury Queen, Myarion, Gayest Son, Kehua, Flying Flag<and Counter. The order was much the same into tho straight and in an interesting finish Vascones scored solidly by a length and a-half from Counter, who got through to beat Gayest Son by half a length. Flying Flag was a length away fourth and next were Chevycbase, who finished very well, and Newbury Queen. Another for Rowana Rowana proved that there was no fluke about her Pahiatua win by winning tho President’s Handicap by a length with Earl Colossus and White Gold in the minor places. White Gold, the favourite, was first out, but Haile Selassie was in front when they had settled down. Next was White Gold followed by Yed Prior, Rowana, Earl Colossus, Lady Lyric and Classical. At the half mile White Gold drew clear and sho turned for home two lengths in front of Earl Colossus, Rowana, Haile Selassie and Lady Lyric. Rowana had the race won a long way from home, but Earl Colossus and White Gold finished well, the margins being a length and three-quarters of a length. Classical was fourth and Haile Selassie next. Old Bill Just Beats Sudan There wero only four starters in the Kumeroa Handicap, which was won by the .phort-priced favourite, Old Bill. Old Bill was the winner a fair distance from the post, but Sudan ’s brilliant finishing
