From Our Own Correspondent.

The Utuwal school picnic was held or. the banks of the Pohangina River on Feb-1 ruary 10. It was a beautiful day and a large crowd of settlers gathered together to give the children and grown-ups a good treat. .Dinner was served early, and a programme of sports was held in the afternoon. There was keen competition among the children for the prizes. Later, each child was given a suitable toy, and fruit and sweets. The adults’ races resulted as follows: Married ladies, Mrs Jim O'Hagan 1; married men. 3lr Hugh Roberts; single men, Harvey McKenzie;-single ladies. Miss Joy Forbes. Mr J. McEwen, , chairman of the school committee, thank ed all present for making the day such a success. He referred to the pending departure of the teacher. Miss Eileen Grant, who Is leaving New Zealand on March »j to take up teaching in Suva, air McEwen thanked Miss Grant for her interest in the children and in the social activities of the community during the past two years. He wished her success and happiness In her new venture, and on behalf of the parents and well-wishers presented her with a chiming bedroom clock, as a token i of their esteem. Miss Grant suitably replied. Adults and children enjoyed bathing in the river, and an enjoyable lea i concluded proceedings. A dance was held on Wednesday even ing in air of funds to erect a tennis court at the school. There was a good attend ance and all enjoyed dancing to music supplied by Mrs A. Coup and Mr Coiln ! Bear le. Miss Grant left for Wellington on Thursday to undergo medical examination prior 1 to her departure for Suva. , Mrs Gray, relieving teacher, has commenced duty at the local school. * 1
