FITNESS CAMPAIGN
Programme Finalised COMMITTEE MEETS At a meeting held on Thursday evening of the Woodville general committee of the National Fitness Campaign, the Mayor, Mr R. R. Johnston, presided. Also present were Mrs. R. L. James, Messrs. J. Sullivan, D. T. Gardner, J. T. Horne, D. Keay, E. J. Stitt, and G. Butler (secretary). Apologies were received from Mrs. J. McCormick and Mr. R. H. Morgan. A number of verbal progress reports disclosed additions to the originally proposed programme of a hockey game and a dance run by the Women’s Institute. Four or five teams will take place in the basketball tournament.
Regarding the proeession, Mr. D. Koay reported that the Salvation Ar ( my Band was willing to lead and the Legion of Frontiersmen would provide gatekeepers at the ground and a parade marshal. Advice was received that both the W.D.F.U. and the W.I. were going to have floats in the procession. The order of the various organisations in the march was left to a programme sub-committee.
On the motion of Mr. D. Keay and the chairman, it was decided that a loud-speaker service should be rented for use on the ground during the large Saturday gathering.
A tender for the sale of ice-cream and soft drinks on the ground was accepted. The question of trophies for the various events on the Saturday was raised by the chairman. Opinions varied on whether trophies should be given for the athletie events. Mr. Gardner said they were not needed but were desirable. Mr. Johnston suggested that the meeting allocate, say, £5 for trophies, the sum to be administered by the programme committee. Mr. Horne suggested that open orders should be given but the chairman thought uniformity of award was desirable for team events. Mr. Keay considered the matter could well be left to the various sports bodies to decide whether there be trophies or not. Mr. Johnston said that the committcjo considered trophies necessary. An allocation as suggested by him was then approved on the motion of Messrs. Keay and Stitt. A programme sub-committee was then set up on the motion of the chairman and Mr. Keay comprising Messrs. J. Sullivan, E. J. Harding, E. J. Stitt and the secretary. It was decided to approach the traffic authorities regarding the control of road traffic on the Saturday. Mrs. James asked whether the committee would assist any organisation to hire a lorry to provide a float in the procession. Mr. Johnston thought there should be no difficulty in procuring the loan of a lorry free of charge for that day. Closing the meeting he stated that the procession and programme were in his opinion quite creditable for a place the size of Woodville.
