Hospital Needs
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME TOR WELLINGTON DISTRICT Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 7. A development programme for the Wellington Hospital area, involving an expenditure of £863.075, including the provision of a combined general ana maternity hospital with a full-time outpatients’ department in the Hutt Valley, ui recommended by the Royal Commislion which recently inquired into the present inadequacies and prospective needs. The commission recommends that the first works to be put in hand should be addition* to the nurses’ home and boiler bouse at the main hospital at Newtown. «nd that improvements to the children s hospital, the erection Of new bulk stor t a. laundry, alterations and provision ol e temporary ward, the erection of t temporary ward, erection of a Hutt Va. ley hospital, the construction of a new mortuary at Newtown, and the building of the centenary block should be proceeded with in that order. On the question of paying wards, the commission express**? the opinion that in view of the urgency of improving ordinary accommodation at the Wellington Hospital, and to do away with gross over-crowding existing there at present, this ordinary accommodation must first be provided. When this baa been done the erection of a private block should be considered with such modification of the system obtaining elsewhere as would meet the local conditions.
It is stared that the present hospital is under established by 414 beds.
