League of Mothers Facing Another Year

ELEVENTH ANNUAL MEETING HELD There was a large attendance at tho eleventh nnnual meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the League of Mothers held yesterday afternoon in the Empire ball, Mrs. T. Daley prosiding. . a, , Tho stage had been artistically decorated with vasos of pink and white camellias, multi-coloured Iceland poppies and branches of pepper-tree, foliage, the work of Mesdames R. MeIver (convener), J. Candy and I'. Anderson. . Members and visitors were greeted at the door by Mesdames P. Wilkinson and E. Herron. Extending a general welcome, Mrs. j Daley remarked that it was very grati-1 tying to see such a good attendance at the annual meeting. Mesdames Wallace (Auckland) and | Greenbank (Wellington) were welcomed as visitors. A halt in the afternoon’s business was made and afternoon tea served by Mesdames K. Clark, A. Graham, H. L. Better, E. L. Pullyn, Webb, O. Thomas, Hardie, L. McNab, J. J. Barker, T. W. Davidson, H. Whittaker, H. Pinch, L. Peters, P. O’Connor and A. N. Matthews was enjoyed. Items by members of the singing circle, ied by Mrs. O Christianson and accompanied by Mrs. D. Williams, gave much pleasure. Farther contributions to tho afternoon’s enjoyment were tap dances by little Jean Hardie. A musical competition under the direction of Mrs. V. Btagpole was won by Mrs. Moxon. Annual Report. The annual report stated: “We review with gratification the year’s activities, which commenced in August, 1937. Ten monthly meetings have been held, tho average attendance being 250. The membership shows an increase of 34 on last year, tho total being 503 the highest on record. Financial members number 211. Varied with addresses, musical items, roll calls and competitions, tho programmes have been of an interesting nature throughout the year. The eleventh birthday party of our branch was celebrated on April 26, fathers being the guests of honour. The magazine and recipe box, supervised by Mesdames Thomas and McKain, has met with its usual success, being a source of continued interest tc members. The singing circle, under the leadership of Mrs. Christiansen, with Mrs. Grover as pianist, continues to be a great asset to our branch, and it: items'during the year have been look od forward to and appreciated. At the invitation of tho provincial executive the singing circle visited Wellington or Leptember 24 last and provided the musical programme at the provincia meeting. An invitation from the Wanganui branch was also accepted and this circle, assisted by Mrs. Me Lachlan as soloist, provided the pro gramme at that branch on May 24. The excellent attendance of members a’ both meetings was very gratifying anc we have pleasure in reporting that the choir was, in both instances, most en thusiastically received. At our lasi Christmas meeting Mrs. Hancox, pre sident of our branch for ten years, wa: reluctantly farewelled, owing to tin transfer of Mr. Hancox to Masterton During the last six months two of ou: committee members have resigned, Air: Pascoe on account of ill health and Air; Miller, who has left the city. On Jun< 35 members of the Wellington anc Dominion executives, accompanied Mrs. G. C'ance, organising secretary visited Palmerston North and estab lished a branch at Terrace End. The happy thought for the afternoon was given by Mrs. Iv. Koberstein.

Mrs. R. Mclver thanked the tea hostesses and the performers for their contributions -to the afternoon’s pleasure and Mrs. E. W. Drake thanked the scrutineers.

At the conclusion of the meeting the successful nominees returned thanks ifor their election.
