ONE-ROUND BOUTS

W ORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP. TOMMY BURNS’ DEFEAT OF SQUIRES THE ONLY PRECEDENT. Tommy Burns, the Canadian, who held the world's championship from 1906 until 1908, when Jack Johnson took it from him at Sydney, scored a victory in one lound in 1907, his opponent being Bill Squires, the Australian. The fight took place at Colma, just outside San Francisco, and Bill was sent to sleep with just three punches. This is the only precedent in the world’s heavyweight contests to Joe Louis’ dramatic K.O. of Schmeling. The foLowing was written of that short battle:— The bell! They actually run to the centre. Squires feints rapidly and shoots a right, his pet punch. He clips Burns on the chin and Tommy’s legs buckle a bit, and then he pulls himself together. Biff-bang, biff-bang and Squires goes down! Up and down again. Up—oh, so groggy! The great Boshte* Bill wobbles like an old dump cart—the Bill Squires who fooled the critics of that day, even staid and capable Bill Naughton, into thinking he would surely whip Burns. Tommy moves in again ard down goes the kangaroo for the third and last time.
