Fire in Tunnel
NEW YORK, June 27. Firemen are having a stern fight with a fire that is raging in a tunnel that is boing built 150 feet below tho East River. The tunnel was reported to be in danger of collapsing when the flames burned the wooden shoring. Handicapped by the terrific pressure and lack of ventilation, the firemen bad to wear gas masks before they could enter the tunnel through a compression tank, in an effort to extinguish the blaze with chemicals. Attempts to quell the flames by reducing the air pressure and allowing the river to pour in were abandoned as being too hazardous.
