AMATEUR BOXING
Manawatu Association Conducts Tournament Eleven bouts were staged by the Manawatu Boxing Association in an allamateur tournament at the Opera House last night. Most of the best local talent was seen in action, while outside centres were represented by men from Hastings, Wanganui, Dannevirke, Shannon and Feilding. There was a good house, and a fine programme was witnessed. Tho standard displayed was well in keeping with that seen at previous tournaments, and the competitors all got a good hand from the crowd. Mr. G. Watchorn was tho third man in the ring, while the judges were Messrs. P. Chase and F. Colvin. Other officials were: Htagc manager, Mr. J. Purvcs; call steward, Mr. A. Scott; timekeepers, Messrs. N. D. Stubbs and W. M. Crystal!; announcer, Mr. R. R. Morton. In presenting tho trophies towards the finish of the programme, Mr. E. R. Wimsett, president of tho association, said it was tho aim of the boxiug authorities to present programmes that would meet with the approval of tho public, and to that end they had secured talent from a wide area. The association regretted that it had been unable to find a suitable opponent for J. Collins. The various bouts were as follow: J. Pellow (Palmerston North) 6.4 v. M. Bowden (Awapuni) 5.9 —The latter, although at a disadvantage in weight and roach, scored a comfortable win. He was much more agile on his feet, and a useful left gained him many points. J. Jones (Palmerston North) 0.12 v. V. Dye (Awapuni) 6.9. —The bout opened at a torrid pace, with Dye carrying the fight to his opponent. There was much wild slogging, though, but the crowd was quite pleased. Both boys tired in the last round, and the decision was a draw. N. Jones (Palmerston North) 9.13 v. E. Nelson (Wanganui) 9.lo.—The former did most of the leading, but his work was nowhere near as clean as that ot his opponent. The latter also showed good defence. The decision went to Nelson. H. Parsons (Hastings) 8.10 v. C. Beale (Hastings) B.l2.—There was a considerable amount of holding and the boxers had to be told to break about every 20 seconds. Parsons had a slight edge over Beale in most departments and got the decision. L. McLaughlan (Palmerston North) 8.1 v. D. McPherson (Palmerston North) B.S. —After a moderate opening, matters livened up in the second round. McLaughlan was showing a nice left and conected repeatedly. Ho got the decision. W. Beatson (Feilding) 9.1 v. J. Mclvor (Hastings) 9.7. —The latter was too experienced for his oponent, who, although game, was outclassed. The decision to Mclvor met with no opposition. D. Coughlan (Palmerston North) 9.10 v. 11. McFarlane (Feilding) 9.lo.—After leading comfortably over the first two rounds, McFarlane walked rings round bis opopnent in the last, making him miss repeatedly and hitting him with rights and lefts to the head. McFarlane’s win was popular with the crowd. W. Porter (Shannon) 9.11 v. P. Kilholly (Dannevirke) 9.6. —Porter ran up a slight lead on points over the first two rounds, but Kilkolly was too good for him in the last, dominating the round. The decision to Kilkolly was well received.
A. Barton (Dannevirke) 10.3 v. S. Warne (Wanganui) 10.4.—Warne was sent to the mat in the first round, but was quickly on his feet, to share the honours of the round. In the second round Warne had his opponent on the retreat and covering up. The third round had not been long in progress when the referee, with Barton in difficulties, stopped the fight. E. Fell (Palmerston North) 13.7 v. A. Lucas (Hastings) 12.10. —The pair turned out to be an even match, but there was a lot of missing iu tho first two rounds. The last was fought at a solid clip, aud with both men at the receiving end of some heavy stuff, they were tiring at the finish. The decision, a draw, was popularly received. A. Kitt (Hastings) 10.8 v. G. Downes (Palmerston North) 10.8.—There was plenty of action in the last bout of tho evening, and both men pleased the
crowd with some scientific work. Both were landing lefts and rights to head and body in the last rounds An extra round,■ making a fifth, was orders, but this did- not go far, a whirlwind attack by Kitt taking all tho stuffing out of Downes and causing the referee to stop the fight.
