A meeting of the Marton Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday evening , and resulted in a resolution being passed o to hold a round table conference with the k Mayor and Councillors on April 20, in order v to discuss the future policy of borough ■g affairs. Although no definite decision was 1 s arrived at, it was suggested that a more ] ,! progressive policy on the part of the Mayor , '' and Council would meet with general ap- ’ proval Mr G. B. Gregory presided over j s the meeting. During the discussion, which j r.’ lasted three hours, tributes were paid by ’g all speakers to the sound administration ; ’j of the borough affairs. Mr Gregory said } Lg it had been a very long time since such ' interest in borough affairs had been dis- 1 .g played by the chamber, which should offer < j_ criticism and suggestions when they . „ thought they were required. Mr J. A. J Bush stated that the town needed better \ amenities and until it got them it would not go ahead. On the suggestion that the , v rates should bo increased, the chairman J r ‘ r pointed out that about 2 per cent, of the borough area paid aboue one-third of the rates, and if the rates were increased : n many ratepayers who found it difficult , now to pay the rates, might find an in- : j.. creased and insurmountable burden. It : ,g was suggested that the incidence of the ( 1 rating might be altered, and it was hoped . - that the round-table conference might " elucidate matters.
