Road Sealing Proposals for Feilding
TATE IN HANDS OF NEW COUNCIL There nas further reference at Tuesday's meeting of the Feilding Borough Council to the road-sealing proposals advanced a couple of months ago by Cr. P. G. Guy when the council resolved to refer a scheme for the sealing of 18 streets at a cost to the borough. of approximately £6OOO, to the incoming council for favourable consideration. At a previous meeting of the council, when Cr. Guy urged that preliminary steps be taken to get the proposals under way, the council decided to secure a report from the borough engineer (Mr. T. K. Hay) as to the number of metalled streets in the borough, as well as a recommendation respecting their order of importance in the matter of sealing. This report was presented at Tuesday’s meeting and in it Mr. Hay supplied a list of the 57 metalled streets in the borough. The aggregate length of these streets was 1331 chains. From that list he submitted the following schedule as being somewhat in order of importance for sealing: Lytton street, 21 chains; East street, 67; South street (Manchester to Drake street), 40; Highfield road, 10; Nelson street, 22; Wellington street, 18; York street, 10; San dilands street, 14; West street (South to King street), IS; Kanfurly avenue, 20; Queen street, 24; Bailey street (Denbigh to Derby street), 10; Owen street, 15; Drake street, 20; Poole street, IS; Monmouth street, 42; Bowen street, 10; Grey street, 13. Mr. Hay estimated that the cost of doing tho foregoing streets would amount to £10,094. Ire anticipated securing subsidised labour, whieh would reduce the amount by £4067, leaving £6027 to be found by way of loan money. In proposing to the council that it carry a resolution recommending the incoming council to raise a loan of £6OOO to enable the sealing work to proceed, Cr. Guy said something about someone having stolen his thunder on tho subject of the street sealing proposals. He 1 was not, however, very concerned about 1 that, but wished to see something de- ! finite done towards getting the work ’ under way. ) Cr. E. Fair supported tho idea, but 1 other councillors were unable to agree > that the incoming council should not 1 oe limited to £6OOO or in any way coin--3 mitted at all. 3 Cr. Guy pointed out that his i>ro- - position was only a recommendation and ' lie saw no harm in it going forward. - He would not agree to eliminating the e mention of £6OOO. c The council finally agreed to refer the : proposals to the incoming council with t a recommendation for their favourable consideration.
