Home-making Courses At Massey College

TO BE INSTITUTED SHORTLY Recognising the need of a certain type of education for girls which in the past has been so conspicuous by its absence, the services of the Warah Amu* Rhodes Fellow, Miss Hazel Johnson, and tho facilities of Massey College will be offered to provide a homemaking short course for girls in the near future. Professor G. S. Percn, principal of Massey College, yesterday put this project before the College Council, :lie members being fully in accord with the suggestion, which will be proceeded with immediately. The aim is to give skill in home aud rural occupations while at the same time arousing interest in them and developing intelligence. The training given should be specially vital for girls to carry out efficiently tho work of rural life, but it should also prove most interesting and useful for all girls who look forward to domestic life as a career, either in their own homes or In the homes of others. Hostel accommodation will be available and the course is primarily intended for girls and young women residiug in any part of the North Island. Provision will be made meantime for about 30 students. The course of instruction will be very largely of a practical kind and training will extend over a period of three weeks. The course is planned for the month of November and will include such subjects as foods and nutrition; vegetables, their preparation and place in the diet; fruits for food and flavour; milk and cheese in the family menu; uses of whole wheat; meal planning; planning and preparing meals; clothing and textiles; purchasing clothes and materials; practical dressmaking; care of clothing; utiliisaton of farm products, i.e., poultry education, dairying and the use, care and consumption cf meat. Should the necessity arise the short course will be repeated and the hope has been expressed that it may be extended to one year.
