Petition Before Council

BRIDGE NEEDED A petition signed by 43 ratepayers and electors of the county asked the Pahiatua Council yesterday to erect a bridge over the stream running across Middle road at Mangatainoka. The petition out: (1) that with the passing of time the bed of the creek is gradually being scoured out and is becoming increasingly difficult to cross with a car or lorry, and in fact cannot be crossed when heavy rain has fallen: (2) that Middle road carries a fair amount of traffic and is used daily by cream lorries, settlers and tradesmen's vehicles. When rain has fallen such vehicles are required to make a long detour; (3) that Middle road cannot be used for moving sheep as they refuse to ford the stream. If the stream were bridgd sheep could be driven along this road and diverted from the North Tiraumea road and Main Masterton highways; (4) the footbridge now crossing the stream is in very bad repair and becoming unsafe. If the stream was bridged to carry vehicular traffic a footbridge would be unnecessary. The chairman moved that when next year’s estimates were under consideration the matter would be considered.
