Inspectors Commence Long Task of Survey

COMPLETION BY JULY. From Our Own Correspondent. NAPIER, May 4. Tho housing survey in Napier is under way. Inspectors of the Napier City Council are now traversing the first locality of the residential area set aside for survey and good progress a, being recorded with the work. The attention of the officers is at present focused on the area served bv Faraday street, Carlyle street and from Thackeray street to Clive Square, with intermediate streets. The programme of inspection as it at present stands provides for Hastings street, Munroe street, the Marine Parade and a portion of Port Ahuriri to be included iu the survey, but other areas may be visited later. The survey is required to be completed by July. On an estimate furnished by Mr. E Grant, the Napier City Council's build ing inspector, when questioned yestci •day, it takes two hours of the time o'* one inspector to deal with each dwell ing. In addition to the actual inSpec lion of a residence, the particulars required for the purposes of tho survey map and other records have to be compiled. Some idea of the scope of tho survey is provided by an examination of the details required, some of which are:— (1) The accommodation provided by existing dwelling houses, with special reference to numbers and size*. of rooms. (2) The physical condition of such dwelling houses and other appurten .ances. (3) The occupancy of dwelling houses, with special reference to ago, sex and number of occupants. (4) The owners and occupiers of dwelling houses and, in the case of rented houses, tho rentals charged. (5) The extent of overcrowding. (6) The population densities of residential areas. (7) Tho condition as regards employment of every occupier of every dwelling included Tn the survey. (8) The reasons for the occupier living in any locality in preference to any other locality. (9) The unimproved value and value of improvements of the premises comprising every dwelling house in the survey.
