Cheltenham Tennis Dance Is Jolly Function

The Cheltenham Tennis Club last week held another very successful dance, there being present tho usual merry crowd of pleasure seekers. With the charming frocking of the ladies ami bright and pretty overhead decorations, a delightful scene was created in the hall. Spirited music was played by a professional orchestra and Mr Tom Short, in the capacity of M.C., saw that patrons were thoroughly well catered for in every respect. A special feature of the evening was a waltzing competition, which proved most interesting and was judged by Miss Gwen Gibbs, of Palmerston North. The winners were Mrs W. Hooper, of Feilding, and Mr L. Bums. Miss Major and her partner gave a demonstration of the quickstep foxtrot and of waltzing, which was greatly appreciated. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Davenport and Mr It. Batchelor, and Air A. AlcCorkindale, of Feilding, was tho winner of a handsome birthday cake, made aud presented for competition by Airs Edwin Sinclair and iced and decorated by Aliss K.-England. The lavish supper, usual to such functions, was served and fTie tables looked most attractive with their decoration of chrysanthemums and cosmos. In the course of tho evening, the president, Air Edwin Sinclair, on behalf of the central union, presented 'tho Guy cup to Beaconsfield, the winning A team for the past season, and Air Gerald Coggin, in accepting it on behalf of Beaconsfield, made suitable reply. Air E. W. Cowdrey then received, at the bauds of the president and on behalf of Halcombe (the winning B grade team), the central union cup which Halcombe became finally possessed of by reason of having won it three times. However, the trophy was very generously given up by Halcombe for further competition. In accepting it from. Air Cowdrey, Air Sinclair complimented the winners on their very sporting spirit and expressed warm appreciation of their generosity. The speakers also thanked the patrons for their loyal support of the functions, which resulted in a great success financially as well as socially.
