Supreme Court Opens

VERDICT OF GUILTY IN CRIMINAL CASE With one criminal case for trial and civil business expected to take a fortnight to dispose of, the quarterly sittings of the Supreme Court in J-'al-merston North opened yesterday morning before Sir John Reed. The following grand jury was sworn in: Messrs. A. E. Mausford (foreman), S. Bailey, C. T. Brewer, A. M. Burgess, J. O. Boniface, W. B. Cameron, H. Christmas, B. G. Cox, D. Fraser, A. J. Goodwin, J. G. Grimshaw, G. Halse, E. R. Harris, T. P. Hart, J. G. Lockwood, R. J. Meatyard, N. P. Nielsen and 11. E. Townshend. A true bill was returned against Frederick Reginald Norman Davis, aged 43, a cook, charged with indecent assault on a girl aged 13. The Court was cleared for the hearing of the charge against Davis. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr. A. M. Ongley. The following jury was empanelled: Messrs. P. T. Jamieson (foreman), YV. E. Brown, D. Blanch, H. Newport, R. J. Cockburn, R. J. Olds, T. J. Edwards, I). N. Johnson, J. P. Lennon, J. A. Coghill, \V. G. Yardley and G. Shannon. After the evidence and addresses had been heard, the jury left to inspect the scene of the alleged occurrence. deliberating for two hours, they returned to the Court seeking permission again to visit the scene, pointing out that 11 were decided on a certain verdict and they wished to convince the other that he was wrong. A verdict of guilty was announced after the full hour hours’ retirement. His Honour intimated that he would sentence prisoner this morning.
