Marist School Proposed For Palmerston North

Between 400 and 500 mcmDers of St. Patrick’s Church attended a meeting on Monday night when it was decided to hold a monster bazaar in August to raise funds for a proposed Marist Brothers or a Christian Brothers school in Palmerston North. Tho meeting was an enthusiastic one, and Rev. Father P. J. Herlihy presided. Tho chairman commented on the wide representation of tho gathering, and remarked that it -was a happy augury for tho proposal. Ho felt tho time was at hand when a Marist Brothers or a Christian Brothers school should bo established at this centre to continue tho education of boys from the third standard. Possibly a secondary department could bo established also. There were nearly 100 boys in the primary schools from Standard 3 upwards who could be dealt with better by tho Brothers, and there were also ; on an average 25 Roman Catholic students who entered on their secondary education at this Centro each year. Tho erection of school rooms would cost in the vicinity of £2500, and if it was desired to have facilities for secondary education as well, £4OOO would be required. »Such a sum would not easily bo raised, but a bazaar should help considerably. On behalf of tho Hibernian Society, Mr. J. Connell moved that tho bazaar be held. He said the society had decided to give £2O toward tho sum required for tho founding of the proposed school, and it was also prepared to hold a stall at the bazaar. In addition, the members would publish a souvenir booklet to assist in swelling tho funds. Tho motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Eight holders of stalls were nominated and elected, and a discussion was held relating to the holding of a queen • carnival and a popularity baby contest. Both tho latter subjects wero held over until a later date. Subscription lists are to be opened to enable those parishioners who desiro to make outright contributions to do so. Mr. T. E. Davidson, on behalf of the St. Patrick’s Rugby Football Club, advised that the proceeds of the club’s weekly dances would bo donated to the fund. A committee was elected, - consisting of two delegates from each of the eight stalls, together with six parishioners and, ut a subsequent meeting, the acting-secretary was authorised to proceed with tho purchase of tickets ior competitions. The donation of a suit or costume to tho value of £lO was made by Father Herlihy, and Mr. Weiglitmun is to make a special cake, both to be the prizes of competitions.
