What British Railwaymen’s Demand Would Cost
ABOUT £50,000,000 EXTRA! (British Official Wireless.) Received Wednesday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 5. The railway staff’s national tribunal has decided against tho claim of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen for a standard day of six hours and a standard week of 36 hours, the abolition of pcrcentago deductions from earnings, concessions on Sunday duty, overtime for night duty and two weeks’ holiday with full pay after 12 months’ service. The award states that the annual extra cost to the companies if the concessions usked for were granted would amount to £9,704,000. If the claim were granted to all classes of railway employees the annual extra cost could not be less than about £50,000,000. The award adds: “All the earuings of the railways could not suffice for such a sum in addition to the present wages even if all classes of investors, including debcntureholders, were deprived of the whole of their interest la dividends.
