Feilding Post Office

FESTIVE SEASON BUSINESS RETURNS Business dealt with by the Feilding Tost Offico over the festive season reflected the increased spending power of the community generally and in addition may be taken as an indication of returning prosperity. Discussing the festive season activities of the local post office with the postmaster (Air. J. B. Purcell) yesterday, a “Times" representative learned that In every case the figures for Christmas, 1935, were exceeded. Air. Purcell said that on this occasion the s.taff received great assistance from the public who responded to the invitation to post early. This was very helpful and enabled the staff to handly the greatly increased business with every efficiency. Dealing with the activities of the postal branch, Mr. Purcell stated that 929 bags of mail were despatched for tho week ending December 24, as against 834 for the same period in 1935, while 993 bags of mail were received, compared with 943 for 1935. In the matter of parcels, 29 parcel receptacles were received, compared with 14 for the week ending December 24, 1935 ; while 111 were despatched from Feilding, as against 54 for the previous festive season. It will be noted that the parcel business was particularly heavy and this, suggested Air. Purcell, was indicative of tho spending power of the communitv.

In tho tolcgrapk branch business was equally as brisk for tho period December 21 to Docember 24 (inclusive). In the following details the figures in parentheses are for the same period 1935:—Forwarded telegrams, 1175 (112 S); received telegrams, 1602 (1291); transmitted teleg rams, 662 (534); outward tolls, 2178 (1826). Forwarded telegrams refer to those handed in at tho Feilding office for despatch, while transmitted telegrams refer to those received from Feilding district offices for transmission outside the district.
