‘Sports Fields for Car Park’
2,000 PROTEST.
LONDON. Town Councillors of Bromley, Kent, proposed to “bite off” a piece of land for a car park. And about three thousand Bromley folk believe the Council wants to ‘ bite off" more than it can chow. Two thousand have signed a protest petition. There has never been such bother about one and a half acres since William the Conqueror wrote up the Domesday Book. Said Mr. W. J. Hakin, of Kafford \V a v:—“The town is seething!" Threo sections are opposing the Council’s decision to seek Ministry of Health sanction to buy part of the Stockwell College playing fields. First come tho British and Foreign Schools Society, owners of tho college, who say their students will bo robbed of the best part of their recreation ground. ■‘Tho college was only moved from Stockwell last September,” said an official. "Our purpose in moving -was to get more playing fields. If we are forced to sell one and a half acres to the Council our object will have been defeated." The second group is the Bromley Amenities Preservation Committee, who hold it would bo wicked to cut out an avenue of ancient trees and to lay children who play in adjacent gardens open to the danger of cars. "If there is an inquiry we shall probably brief counsel," said Mr John Humphreys, chairman of the committee. The third group consists of ratepayers who claim the car park would lower the value of property.
