Rongotea
From Our Own Correspondent Rev. Fr. Brooks, of Stratford, when in Rongotea on Sunday, intimated that he had been instructed by Archbishop O'Shea that he is to remain in charge of the Feilding parish, from which Rongotea is served, until the successor of the parish priest, the late Rev. Fr. . R. J. Hegarty, is appointed. This will probably take place early next year. As the district under the care of the parish priest is widely scattered, reaching as far north as Apiti, a good deal of travelling is necessary. It has. been pointed out that Fr. Brooks does not possess a motor car ana the suggestion has been put forward that under the circumstances the most economical way would be to hire a car for, say, six months, the Rongotea section of the parish being required to provide a proportion of the cost. The proposal was placed before the parishioners who wholeheartedly approved. Messrs. Goodwin, Robinson and Carroll were appointed a special committee to collect the necessary funds. An innovation suggested by Rev. Fr. Brooks was that instead' of bringing altar boys over from Feilding to ' the Rongotea Church, suitable local hoys should receive instruction and act in that capacity. Young Farmers’ Club. A meeting of the Young Farmers’ Club was held on Friday, Messrs . H. J. Lancaster (president), F. C. Saxton and A. N. Morcom were present and there was a largo number Of members. Mr, Geo. Burgess presided over the meeting. Leave of absenco was granted tile secretary, Mr. J. Gloyn, on account of illness. An apology for absence was received from Mr. A. G. Dear who is in Auckland and the secretary was instructed to write Mr. Dear and express the club's sympathy with him in his ill health. The chairman submitted a report of tlie euchre and dance which showed a credit balance of £5 9s 2d. Mr.. Hughes was admitted, to membership. Messrs. N. If. . and D. Knight were elected honorary . members. An invitation from' the New Zealand Grassland Association to attend its conference at Massey College was received. It was decided to enter a .team in the judging competition ■ which Is being arranged under the auspices of the Jersey Breeders’: 1 Association. Mr. A.' N. Morcom submitted to the meeting a proposition that members should avail themselves of the opportunities to bo provided by the Rongotea Horticultural Society to compete in classes for farm roots, fruit, etc. at the coming autumn show. He pointed out that it would quicken the interest in the work of both societies and give the club members a definite object to work for. The chairman endorsed Mr. Morcom’s remarks which were heartily approved by the meeting. The chairman and secretary were appointed to assist
Mr. Morcom in furthering the scheme. It was stated that there was a possibility of young farmers’ clubs being formed in other parts of the district, when it was hoped to arrange inter-club competitions to be staged at Rongotea and the finalists to make a display at the A. and P. Show at Palmerston North. Mr. P. G, Cope, of Palmerston North, was introduced to the meeting by the president. Mr. Cope gave an instructive lecture on farm accountancy. Simplicity was the keynote of the methods put forward which resulted in accuracy and a minimum amount of time being spent on this very necessary branch of farm work. Practical demonstrations were given on a blackboard. The chairman thanked Mr Cope for his attendance and address and stated that he considered the simplicity of the methods outlined would assist many of those present. The next meeting will take the form of an open discussion and papers are to be read by members and all are expected to take part.
