Perry, Austin, Hughes and Tuckey have beeii chosen to represent Britain in the challenge round of the Davis Gup. The speeial correspondent of the Australian Associated Fress at Wimbledon says that 090 people, twenty of whom were robbed rvliilo they slept on the footpath, waited all night despite the fact that the final day would be with-
out Helen Wills-Moody and, therefore, lacking its normal glamour. Miss Helen Jacobs, appearing for her fifth time in the final round, showed all the versatility and persistence necessary against Mrs Sperling’s unpolished but safe game. Each played almost exclusively from the baseline, but the American’s service and speed about the court were the deciding factors.
. Miss Jacobs led 3 —l in the second set, but' the German, driving with more determination and splendidly withstanding Miss Jacobs’ cross-court attack, took the nest four games, and the tenacious backhand exchanges, which often went to twenty-five strokes per rally, continued. Miss Jacobs saved set point with a beautifully-judged volley after a rally of 45 strokes, but the German fought back and held the set. Attacking vigorously, Miss Jacobs led 3—l in the next set, a net cord depriving her of a 4—l lead. Splendidly as the agile Miss Jacobs volleyed and smashed, (he patient Mrs Sperling levelled at 4—-!. Miss Jacobs, aided by a. net cord, then regained (he lead. Mrs Sperling staved off two match points, but. was eventually beaten. Miss Jacobs was given an ovation for her victory in an exhausting and clever, if unspectacular, match lasting one and three-quarter hours. Miss Jacobs, who approximately won on Independence Day, said: “f will come here year after year if only to meet someone better than myslf. Today’s was the hardest of my Jive Wimbledon singles finals. It was a terrific game.”
Miss Jacobs was tired and in the women’s doubles final, Misses Stammer? and James, who were at the top of their form, had the easiest win.
