Women Deceived

THEFT FROM SWEETHEART ‘‘You appear to havo set out on a Life of deceit, and a term of imprisonment might pull you up before it is too late.’’ This remark was made by the chairman of the Liverpool magistrates when passing sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour on Joseph Bambrough, aged 23, of Evcrton, Bambrough pleaded guilty to the theft of a bicycle, a wristlet watch and a handbag. According to Mr. W. Culshaw, prosecuting, Bambrough became acquainted with Miss Ellen George, of Liverpool, and made an impression on hex by saying ho owned a number of fruit shops in Liverpool, and promising to take her for a flight in an aeroplane. Bambrough visited Miss George at her home every day. He took her out for walks, and to gain her complete confidence, showed her a will purporting to be made out in her favour. Ho borrowed a bicyclo from a brother of Miss George and did not return it, and then, by a false pretence, induced a womau friend to Miss George, a lieutenant in the Salvation Army, to part with her wristlet watch.

Finally, while walking with Miss George in a park, Bambrough carried her handbag for her, and on reaching her home declared he had lost it. When arrested Bambrough made a confession of tho thefts, and asked for a further charge of the thefts of money to be taken into consideration, lie admitted he had posed to another girl as a solicitor’s clerk, and told her she had come into some money under a will.
