Barely Escaped With Their Lives
FAMILY LEFT DESTITUTE BY FIRE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Awakened by the- crackling of flames Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Walker, of Mauumva, had barely time to save their seven children before their house was completely destroyed by lire this morning. The family were left absolutely destitute as tliej' escaped in their night attire, but as a result of au appeal clothes valued at between £3O and £35 were contributed by this evening. Sawmill Destroyed Per Press Assoclat'on. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. An outbreak of fire on Saturday morning completely destroyed the Haldane Sawmilling Company’s premises at Haldane. The lire started in tho rniil buildings, but the cause is unknown. The mill building was gutted and the machinery damaged, but except for the saws it will be possible to repair the machinery. Three huts within 20 feet of the building were not touched. Neither the mill nor machinery was insured.
