From Our Own Correspondent. Women’s Institute. There was a good attendance at the June meeting of the Women’s Institute. Mrs. W. G. Rising was in the chair. An apology for absence was read from Mrs. A. Wylie. A letter was read from the Institute for the Blind, relative to the VV.I. undertaking a sale of goods made by the blind, and it was decided to send for a sample of men’s working socks. A catalogue was passed round for perusal by members. The treasurer presented the financial statement to date which showed a small credit balance. Members were reminded that the subscriptions are now clue, and also of the forthcoming concert which has been organised to assist finances. Mrs. O’Hara was next introduced to the members, and proceeded to demon- i strata the making of flowers ana dressing table ornaments from crepe paper, her work being keenly appreciated by all. Mrs. O’Hara had on view some beautiful examples of her handiwork. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Hoggard, Mitchell and McMurtrie. There followed a competition arranged by Miss H. Beech, members taking a great interest. This resulted In a draw by four members. The monthly competition, “best article from three ounces of wool,” resulted in a win for Miss McFadden with Miss Sargent second and Miss Day third. The July competition was announced as being the best gingerbread from a given recipe. Miss McFadden proposed a vote of thanks to the demonstrator which was carried by acclamation. Mrs. Eising thanked the hostesses and the judges, Mesdames Austin, Matthews and White. It was decided by popular vote to hold the July meeting a week later than the date arranged, by reason of the close proximity of the drama festival. • Personal. Miss Betty Elwin has returned from a visit to Wellington. Miniature Rifles. On Tuesday evening the Makamako Rifle Club’s team journeyed to Mangatalnoka and engaged in a friendly match, the visitors proving victors by 957 to 931. The scores were as follow: Makomako: J. Day 100, G. Day 98, S. Holdaway 98, J. Gariick 97, F. Übbett 97, W. Eising 96, H. Eddie 94, J. Sargent 94, C. Gariick 93, G. Atkinson 90; total 967 Mangatainoka: S. Annensen 99, H. Goodwin 96, B. Keast 95, H. Grubner 94, S. Staples 90, W. Kirkland 92, M. Hughes 91, H. Rusden 91, L. Rusden 93, Miss Campbell 90; total 931.
