Children’s Ball A Huge Success

RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL’S ANNUAL FUNCTION.

Russell 'Street School pupils had a happy tirno at tho annual fancy dress ball- held in tho Empire hull.

- Promptly at the allotted timo of commencement, tho children swung into the grand march m which tho many beautiful and original costumes could be sceii to advantage.

Following tho grand march,- the chairman of the school committee (Mr J. A. Grant) took tho - opportunity of welcoming all and expressed tho hope thut an enjoyable time would bo'spent.' He made refercnco to the keen interest shown-by members of the ladies' committee and the work they had done to secure tho success of the function. Mr Grant thou called on tho Muyor (Mr A. E. Mansford) -to open tho proceedings. - ■ Mr Mansford made reference to the great strides the school had made since : its establishment. To-day, ho said, knowledge and education were denied to no one, but the great thing was to apply, this. knowledge along sane and Christian lines. Ho urged thoso who were at school to devote part of their time to helping others about them, whether' it be in school Work or in some other way. By this means both tho school and its pupils would reap a rich harvest.

Eor two and a-lialf hours the children pleasingly entertained tho audience with a series of figure and folk dances, favourable comments being passed on tho ability shown. A pleasing feature was the complete order that prevailed during the children’s dances. Credit was reflected on the controlling ability of tho headmaster (Mr F. C. Campbell) and members of tho stall who were in charge. The programme presented by the pupils was as follows: —Seniors, “Winifred’s Knot,” “Black Fag,’’ “Ace ol Diamonds, ” “Sellingers’ Round,” “Captain Jinks,’’ ‘‘Sweet Kate, “Gathering Beuscods,’’ “Sir Roger dr Covcrely,” Highland scottische, Mountain March, and “Nuts in May.’’ Juniors: “Will you please be my partner,’’ “Littlo Playmate,” Tasmanian waltz, skipping dance, “Lubin Loo,” “Duke of York,” “Bridge of Avignon,” tripping dance, and “bhoeniakcr.” Seniors and juniors: Tasmanian waltz and finger polka.
