From Our Own Correspondent. Valedicvory.

Despite very unpleasant weather conditions, a largo gathering of members of the Foxton Tennis Club assembled at the homo of Mr and Mrs T. W. Hunt, Johnston street, early on Monday evening for the purpose of bidding farewell to one of the club’s most popular players in the person of Mr Bruce Gavin. Mr Gavin, who has been on the stuff of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the past six years, has been transferred to the Palmerston North branch. Mr It. Read (club captain) expressed the regret felt by the club at losing such a valued member. After wishing Mr Gavin every success in his new sphere of life he called upon him to accept a token of appreciation and esteem. Mr Gavin suitably replied thanking those responsible for the function for the honour they had conferred upon him. Musical honours and cheers were then accorded the guest of the evening. Opportunity was also taken of saying farewell to Miss Joan Mason, who has been an active member of the club and Mr Read extended to her the best wishes of the members' for her success in her new sphere of activity. Miss Mason suitably responded and was accorded musical honours. Social Guild. The monthly social afternoon of the Presbyterian Radies' Guild was held at the residence of Mrs D. R. Barron, <Jt Robinson street, there being a good attendance of members present. A verj enjoyablo afternoOn was spent and two interesting competitions were won by Mrs J. T. Edwards and Mrs J. M. Thomson respectively. Mrs J. T. Edwards rendered a vocal solo. In order to assist the extension fund for the Sunday school room, a bring and buy stall was held. The fund for the extension of the schoolroom has now grown to a considerable amount and It was decided to call a meeting at an early date to discuss tho nature of the work to be undertaken. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess. Mrs D. 'll. Barron, who was assisted by Miss Joan Barron. The next meeting of the guild is to be held on Tuesday, April 7, at the residence of Mrs J. Veale, of Oroua Downs, ' when Mesdnmes Veale, B. Gardiner, C. V. Smith and Thompson will act as hostesses. Football Enthusiasts Meet. Mr M. E. Perreau (Mayor) presided over a meeting of football enthusiasts and those interested, which was held last week. Mr F. Robinson said that there had been a growing feeling in Foxton that all the players should bo grouped together, Irrespective of club membership, and three or four teams picked which should compete among themselves weekly. This would ensure a match locally every Saturday. Past experience had shown that- most Interest centre* around matches between local teams i’.i Foxton and they had always drawn the biggest "gates.” The borough council was prepared to grant the local clubs the use of Easton Park If tho proposal were adopted and it was suggested that the gate takings should be divided amongst the various clubs at tho end of the season, thus assuring them some guaranteed finance. Personally the speaker thought the scheme well worth trying for a season. A lengthy discussion took placo after which it was unanimously decided that Messrs M. E. Perreau, Devonshire. W. Richardson, G. Walls, F. Robinson, J. Barber, \V, Baker, E. Taylor, W. D. Neville and. D. Hutchison should act as a committee to go into the question of ways and means of bringing auout the change and to report to a. full meeting ut an early date. On tho motion of Mr W. D. Neville it was decided that the names of the various local clubs snould be dropped in the meantime. Shipping. After having been ourbound at Greymouth for a week, tne M.V. Huanui arrived in port late on Monday afternono with a cargo of coal - for Palmerston North. Personal. Mr D. M. Hutchison, who for the past tvveive months has been mill manager lor .New Zealand Vv uolpaclt and textiles Elmited at X'oxton, has severed his connection with the company. Mr W. E. Hale, of tne linn's engineering department, is now in charge pending the appointment of a successor, Rev. E. \V. Burgin, b.A., Vicar of Mangaweka, has been appointed to succeed Rev. H. S. Kenney as Vicar of Foxton and Shannon All Saints' Parochial District, and will take up his pastoral duties early in May. Mr John Farquliar, of Sydney, is at present visiting Foxton where he is the guest of Mr and Mrs Brewer, of Avenue road. Mr W. Kirland has returned to-Foxton from Australia. Mr J. K. Hornblow, J.P., has received a notification from the Minister of Education that he has been reappointed honorary child welfare officer for another term. Mr and Mrs W. Moffat, of Oroua Downs, accompanied by Mr S. Moffat and Mrs J. Stratford, also of Oroua Downs, are at present on a motor tour of the north. The friends of Mrs R. Owen will b ■>. pleased to learn that she has returned home from a private hospital, and is nowmaking good progress towards recovery from her recent illness. Mr C. R. Tutty, manager of the local branch of the Community Stores, is at present on a fortnight’s holiday which he is spending at Gor.e, South Island. During his absence, Mr Mcßride, of Palmerston North, will, act in a relieving capacity at tho local store.
