Confidence Gang
OPERATE AT WAVERLEY SHOW.' Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Mar. 17. A confidence gang operated at Waverlcy show yesterday and one of the number who acted as a decoy, Robert Watson, aged 30, was before tho Court , this morning charged with aiding aud abetting in the commission of the offence and was fined £5, with costs 10s. D'ctectivo Packman, who arrested accused, said one well-known Waitotara farmer had been induced to write out a cheque for £IOO, but became suspicious and stopped payment. Complaints were received that various sums had been lost ranging from £2 to £ls. Accused stood at tho gato and picked out likely farmors and engaged thorn in conversation and then would bo joined by other members of the gang and the farmer would bo introduced to what was’ known as the “golf hole game” of foiling a ball into a hole. The temptation here was to double up to recover losses. W’hen accused was arrested others of the gang disappeared with most of the money.
