Cheltenham School Jubilee
EX-PUPILS SCATTERED PAR AND WIDE. For some months past enquiries have been made for tho addresses of pupils who have attended the Cheltenham School during the fifty years of its existence. Former pupils.have scattered to almost every province of New Zealand, while some have gone to live overseas. One fact that strikes one as letters arc received from many sources, is that their life at the school has made a lasting impression on pupils and one can see by the tone of tho letters that the old school still has a hold on tho affection of its pupils of many years ago. Several former pupils are residing in Australia. One is the wife of a missionary in Uruguay (South America), while two are at present in Abyssinia, being connected with the Soudan Interior Mission.
A family that has scattered tho most is the Cunningham family, well-known early settlers of the district; in fact, Cunninghams derives its name from this source.
A daughter, Mrs D. 11. Mac Lean, still resides in tho homo district. Mr John Cunningham, who was tho first pupil teacher appointed to assist Mr Coventry in 159(5, is now a solicitor in Christchurch. Another brother, William, has lived for over 30 years in Alaska. lie has been a trader there and is now tho secretary of the Alaskan Airways. Adam Cunningham became a marine engineer, qualifying in Wellington and Glasgow, and is now chief engineer on the Kowara, a boat engaged on the Australian coastal trade. Walter became a journalist and lias been a resident of the United States for 25 years. He edited several newspapers, and was with Mr Henry Ford at Detroit for eight years and wrote a book on economic conditions existing in Ford's works. Ho is now with the Alameda Corporation, San Francisco. Another brother, Major, died in Nelson several years ago. Thus it can be seen that even from a country school, that at its peak reached only to the ninety mark, scholars can go out into the world and make good.
