Recipe For Old Age

Eat when hungry (particularly spinach, if not, grass)—seep on wood —bandage the legs—and rub the stomach night and morning. That is how John Carl East Deer Hill, a Mohawk Indian, living in New York, manages to keep cheerful at the age of 105. “I sleep on that," he remarked in an interview, pointing to a large piece of wood on his bed. “I put it between me and the mattress." Here are more of his “hints” on how to live:— Use a pillow with leaves in it.

Bandage your legs. Take off the bandages at night. If you are 25 now and bandage your legs you will feel like 15 in a few days. Never take medicine. Smoke three or four pipes, and put them in the sun when you are not using them. Koll your tobacco in the palm of your hand with a little vaseline. Then you will have no nicotine and no sore throat. Cooked or raw grass is as good as spinach. Chop it up and put plenty of salt and pepper on.
