United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.

Received Monday, 9.50 p.m. ASTORIA (Oregon), Jan. 12. The coast guard reported that 34 members of the crew of the freighter lowa perished to-day when the vessel was smashed to pieces by a 90-mile-an-hour gale which disrupted shipping on this section of the Pacific Coast. Early this morning the lowa wirelessed that she was in difficulty off Peacock Spit at thosmouth of the Columbia river. A coastguard cutter witnessed the break-ing-up of the lowa, but high seas prevented tossing over a rescue line. The men could plainly be seen grasping the rigging as the vessel sank. Aid is being rushed to several other vessels reported to be in distress, but it is not yet known if there are other casualties.
