Summer Sickness Affects Russell Street Attendances

NEW REGULATIONS FOR GRADING PURPOSES

Tho Russell Street School committeo met last evening, Mr. J. A. Grant presiding. Also present were Messrs. J. P. McDavitt (secretary), F. W. Coombs, M. J. McArtncy, G. Coppell, C. S. Trask, T. Simpson W. H, Browu. Mr. P. S. Larcomb was appointed kon. auditor to the committee.

A financial statement was presented showing that during the past year receipts exceeded payments, by £6O. Expenditure had been kept to a minimum. The committee had a credit of £177, aud contingent liabilities would not reduce this amount below £l6O. Of this £96 had been raised specifically as a baths fund. It remained for the committeo to decide how it would dispose of the money. During tho year receipts totalled £152 17/10, including capitation £92. This, with a balance of £ll7 10/8, totalled £270 S/6. Payments rvero £92 10/11, tho chief appropriations being for tho care of the buildings and grounds. This left a credit of £177 17/7, held in bank deposits.

Tho headmaster (Mr. F. C. Campbell) reported a roll of 213, with average attendances of 205.2, 201, 196, 195.3. Summer sickness had affected the. attendances. Regulations recently gazetted stated that whero an infectious disease or exceptionally severe weather or other eauso affected attendances to the extent of 10 per cent., then 95 per cent, of the average weekly roll number for tlie term affected should be regarded as the average attendance for tho term concerned. Miss R. Rawle, additional assistant, had left for Ohakuue. Dental clinic payments so far received totalled £4 12/-.

WEST END Those present at last evening’s meeting of the West End School committeo wero Messrs: A. Penketh (in the chair) L. Hogg, J. Dalzicl, W. Collins, McLean and Pinfold. Tho headmaster (Mr. H. W. Jackson) reported a roll of 342 with an average attendance of 303.5. Thero had In good deal of sickness amongst the pupils but most had now recovered. At tho school picnic the Herbert Smitt eup3 wore competed for. Tho girls’ cup was won by Rose Lindsay with Joyce Mullingcr second and Hazel Christensen third. Tho boys’ cup was won by Eric" Jackson with Harry Mouldey second and Neil McLean third. It was noted with pleasuro that old boys of tho school had put up excellent, performances at tho Technical High School swimming championships. Mr. Jackson drew attention to the inadequate library facilities in tho school and ho would appreciate a grant to replenish tho class libraries in the various rooms. Tho gift of threo pictures from Mrs. (Dr.) Bett was acknowledged. The headmaster informed tho committeo that no other school in the city was as badly off for books for tlio class libraries as West End, and tho committeo asked tho chairman (Mr. Tremaine) and secretary (Mr. Oliver) to confer with tho liedamaster and act as fundpermitted. Tlio Manawatu-Oroua School Committees’ Association askod for an opinion on tho proposed Biblo in Schools Bill. Members expressed views both for and against but as the committeo was unaware of the detailed contents of the Bill, the letter was simply tabled.
