Oroua Licensing Committee

TEMPOEARY LICENSE OF ASHHURST HOTEL.

Tho business before yesterday’s quarterly meeting of tho Oroua Licensing Oommitteo at Pcilding included the application for an oxtension of tho present tomporary license, in favour of tho Masonic Hotel, Ashhurst, which was destroyed by fire soino months back, for a further three months.

On behalf of Mr. D. C. Cullinane, acting for the liccnsco (Air. K. P. B. Havill), Air. J. Graham formally applied for the extension. Police Inspector Bawle stated that since tho hotel was burned down in 1934 very little had been dono in the way of rebuilding and he had intended to raise an objection to tho application which, ho understood, was to be for six months. However, as counsel had asked for an extension of three months only he had no objection to offor.

Air. R. AI. Watson, S.AI. (chairman) said that the Bench was prepared to grant the application until the annual meeting of tho committeo in June next. In granting the application asked for by counsel tho Bench wished it to be clearly understood that this was not tho first time application had been mado for an extension in tho caso of this particular hotel. The building had been burned down in the early months of 1934 and tho committee felt that tho matter of rebuilding could not bo allowed to drag on much longer. The present application could, therefore, be regarded by counsel as the last one. tliat would bo granted in tho present form. Air. Graham said that ho would convoy the direction of tho Bench to counsel for the licensee. He went on to say that tho application before tho committee was merely one to carry on, ns at the present time, and tho Bench had before it the plans of the proposed new building. It would bo of assist-a-qpe to the licensee if tho Bench would givo its views on the plans. Both the licensee and tho architect wero in attendance at the Court. Air. Watson said that the Bench did not intend to deal with the plans in a new locality sense at. the moment. The chairman went on to say that the plans had been approved of by the Health Department, and ho wished to know whether the police had seen them. Replying in tho affirmative Inspector Eawlo remarked that the plans wero not beforo tho Court. Ho found it difficult to express his views on the matter, but as it'stood ho had nothing further to add. Tho Bench intimated that it would, take an opportunity of going over the plans when the adjournment, took place. Denbigh Hotel. Air. E. Al. Watson, S.M., presided over the meeting of tho Oroua Licensing Committee and there were, also present: Atcssrs. E. Goodbcherc, H. Booth, J. W. Bramwell, Thos. Watson and P. G. Guy.
