Awahuri

From Our Own Correspondent. The annual meeting of the Awahuri School’s Old Pupils’ Association was held on Thursday evening, when Mr. J. M. Giles presided over a good attendance of members. The president presented his report, which read as follows:—Twelve months ago a meeting was convened by Mr. W. A. Salt for the purpose of bringing together old pupils of the Awahuri School, and it was decided at that meeting to form an Old Pupils’ Association. We acquainted interested people of the formation of the association, and requested their patronage and assistance in tracing other members. However, this did not meet with the success anticipated, but it is gratifying to know that we have so far a membership of 40. This is not a very large number, considering we have nearly 1000 names on the roll. The efforts of the secretary to boost the association are worthy of commendation and the committee has every reason to he thankful for his services. The first function of this association was a huge success financially, although members were admitted free. During that evening, sixteen new members were enrolled, which was considered by the committee very satisfactory. We hope this function will be an annual event, as it will undoubtedly attract new members locally and from surrounding districts. The coster ball was a novelty so far as the district was concerned, and like the first, was a financial success. The third function was held in honour of Mr. Charles Hicltford, who was recently married. Mr.- Ci Hickford had assisted this association at all its functions in the capacity of M.C. -and in various other ways and in recognition of his services the committee presented him with a small token of esteem. The committee’s thanks are due to the following people for the many services freely given this association at Its various functions:— As M’s. C., Messrs. C. Hickford, R. Bond, W. Manson and G. Bracken; as doorkeepers, Messrs. J. Milligan, T. Manson, W. Salt; for music, Mr. M.-R. Bennett and Mrs. Dafter, Rongotea; supervising suppec arrangements, Mesflamea & HUfflEfe?
