Wanganui’s Diamond Jubilee Show

DISTRICT SUCCESSES AT FIXTURE Ono of the outstanding events of the Wanganui Agricultural Association’s diamond jubilee show was the New 'Zealand chilled beef championship, the principle aimed at being breed cattle suitable for the English chilled bcc.f market. The section was divided into five classes in accordance with the five defined breeds —Hcrefords. Shorthorns, Aberdeen Angus, Red Polls and crossbreds. The event was judged by Mr W. Marks, of W. and R. Fletcher (N.Z.), Ltd.. Auckland; Mr. E. A. Maansell, of T. Bortluvick and Sons, Masterton, with Mr S.,_ g, H . Tiinbs, ..late of Smithfield, now of Wanganui, as umpire. The placings on the hoof gave pride of place to Mr J. J. Taylor (Westmere), who was exhibiting in the twoyear Hereford steer class. Twelve animals from the five classes wero placed by the judge, and will all have chanc.cs „tp epmpeto. on the hooks at Imlay and also at Smitkficld, London. The .placings „were: — J. J. Taylor . Taylor’s champion steer also took the-prize for the best ‘‘baby beef” beast. Placings in the various chilled beef classes were as follow: — Shorthorn steer.—W. H. Reid (Nukumaru), 1; W. H. Farley (Westmere), 1. Red Poll steer.—G. R. Forster-Pratt (Palmerston North), 1 and 2. Beef cross steer—J. Wyley and Sons (Kaunagaroa), 1 and 3; Fernie Bros. (Kakatahi), 2. The following championship awards were made:— North Island champion Red Poll bull.—J. M. Campbell’s (Taonui) Adderstone Quality; reserve, J. C. Anderson’s (Wanganui) Kukuta Gay Chieftain. Cow: G. E. District Successes District exhibitors to participate in the. awards were as follow: — : G. B. Porster-Pratt (Palmerston N.) secured first and second awards in the Bed'Poll classes for yearling bull, first lor,two-year-old heifer, first and second for yearling heifer, and first for pen of two heifers. In the fat classes the same exhibitor won a first award for fat cow, most suitable for shop purposes. In the Milking Shorthorn classes the Weraroa exhibitor and breeder, B, \. Brown, won first awards for yearling bull and bull calved since July 1,1934, cow of 4 years and over, two-year-old heifer, and heifer calved since July 1, 1934, in addition to the championship for females and two secoitd awards. In the Jersey classes, Mrs W. G. Shannon, of Palmerston North, secured two second awards with Glenbury Beauty and thirds with Ku Ku Boy Emperor and Gl'enburn Bronze, while Mr Shannon took a second with Mountain Meadows. . In the horse events, J. J. Waller, of

Awapuni, tied for second in the maiden hunters with Gaswyn, and took second and third prizes with Glendo.wie and Gaswyn respectively in the leaping competition, steeplechase style. In the pony, 14.2 and under class, Miss D. Young, Ivairanga, took first plaee with Larrikin and second place •with Silver.

In the fat sheep class, J. P. McKelvie, of Carnarvon, secured four firsts, four seconds and three thirds. In the Bomney Marsh open classes,

’firsts and two seconds, while A L. ■Wheeler, of Marton, took four firsts in the open classes and three firsts and two thirds in the natural condition classes. The Wanganui Kennel Club conducted an exhibition in conjunction with the show and in the Scottish terrier

classes J. Taucher, of Ashhurst, took first prizes for best dog or bitch, puppy under 12 months, and puppy of opposite sex to the open class winner. T. Hosking; of Palmerston North, took first awards in the rough-coated collie . classes with puppy under 12 months', Colonial-bred and junior, best dog or bitch, and best puppy. In the Cocker Spaniel classes, Mrs-P. S. Lacey, of .Whakarongo, took first.
