Kairanga County Council Meeting

GENERAL CONTROL MATTERS. Mr. D. Coilis presided over yesterday’s meeting of the Kairanga County Council at Palmerston North, when there were also present: Messrs. R. A. Mercer, M. A. Moody, W. G. Shannon, J. Batchclar, C. Anderson, M. W. Voss and P. G. Mildon. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr. W. E. Hopcroft. Report of Activities.

Reporting on the various works carried out during the past month tho act-ing-engineer (Mr. L. (J. Pickering) stated that the number of men employed liad averaged 27, while a total of 218 had been working under the. No. 5 scheme, 75 being on "over the fence” work. "During the past three months,” he continued, "the weather has been exceptionally fine with the result that very little metal has been required for patching and metalling, although more loose metal appears to be on most roads, this having been caused by travelling and wearing of road surface to the extent that many are nowdown to original boulder foundations; more particularly through exposure of boulders which makes grading ineffective. Taouui riding: A gang of men has been working in Lougburn township, cleaning road Hanks and patching footpaths. The drain leading from the township to Reserve drain through private property has been cleaned out. Cleaning of road llanks on College street and Racecourse road has now been completed. Two largo stumps on the Longburn-llongotea road have been removed, also one on No. 1 line. The motor grader has been over the more important roads. The riding truck has been employed in carting sods for shoulders on the Kairanga-Bunnythorpc road scaling contract. Mangaono riding. Crushing of metal at James’ line has been discontinued, the crusher having shifted to Kahuterawa stream, where crushing is t’o commence immediately. Two large culverts have beeu renewed on the Kairanga-Bunnythorpc road preparatory to the metalling and sealing of the remaining untarred length to Bunnythope. During the month approval for the county to proceed with shoulders and 'the sub-base was received, one mile having been completed to date. Specifications and plans ioi tho top course and scaling have been forwarded to Wellington and have been

approved. Tenders are now being called for the work. The riding team has been carting metal lor the sub-base of new work, also material for shoulders. The riding truck has been carting bouldeis and rough metal for building up Kairanga-Bunnythorpc road to correct. the camber and alignment prior to application of crushed metal. A length of 50 chains of drain on Richardson’s line-has been cleaned and widened. The motor grader has been cutting off corrugations and raking in loose metal from tho sides. Fitzherbert riding: A large gang has been employed in widening and improving visibility at dangerous bends on No. 4 line, good progress having been made with the work. The small stringer bridge on No. 4 line was repaired during the month, a new ISft. stringer having been put iu and part of the decking renewed. This bridge is iu rather a bad state and its renewal will have to be considered iu the near-future as piles, sheeting and cap are rotten. The bridge is certainly not safe for heavy loads. Aokauterc gang lias been stripping the metal face and widening the l’ahiatua track. Several chains of fence have been re-erected on the extended widened formation. Tho riding trucks have been carting pit metal for building up road Hanks, and tho blinding of river shingle.”—The report was adopted. Correspondence and General.

The Tiakitahuua Go-op. Dairy Coy., Ltd., wrote expressing thanks for the promise to put chips on the highway.— Received.

The Stoncy Greek Hall Association wrote, expressing thanks for tho splendid work carried out in connection with the parking area at tho Whakarongo hall. —Received.

A request for better parking facilities at the Linton hall was made by the Linton Hull committee. —The engineer and members for the riding arc to inspect the area and take action if such a course is deemed satisfactory. The Milson Progressive Association requested the return ol' relief workers to the railway settlement to assist in work on the roads and footpaths. Tools were available and supervision would be provided if required. In addition, attention was drawn to the state ot Milson line road between Boundary road and Bovis’ store, where the highway was showing signs of wear in the centre and at the sides. —The matter was left in the hands of the actingengineer. The Bitzhcrbert ranger (Mr. J. Vining) reported that 7-f head of stock had been dealt with up to November 14. The Awapuni ranger, Mr. J. Baldiwn, stated that 27 head of straying stock had been recovered. The statement of bank balances showed the following poffitiem:— County fund account No. 1, £37(55 12s 7d (debit); county fund account No. L> (plant) (adjusted to 31/3/1933), £SIS7 15s Id (credit); county fund account No. 3 (tarred roads) (adjusted to 31/3/1933), £534 Is 3d (credit); i'itzhcrbcrt riding culverts and bridges account, £ls J3s 7d (credit); Linton Domain Board (Dost Office .Savings Bank account), £57 2s 5d (credit); Binton Domain Board (on iixed deposit, due S/6/1934), £44 10s (credit); Bitzherbert West water race management account (includes £7O on iixed deposit), JSSS os Sd (credit). The amount of £BIB7 15s -Id in the plant account was inclusive of £3500 on iixed deposit at 2 per cent, due on January, 1934. The statement ol expenditure and balances available was as follows: Taonui riding, £862 13s 5d unexpended, £.1460 6s 7d available; Mangaone riding, £ll6 3s 7d expended, £2194 16s 5d available; Bitzhcrbert riding, £lO9l 0s lid expended, £1452 19s Id available. The rate statement showed that £1221 Is Id was still unpaid as compared with £2446 Is 4d at March 31. This comprised £204 10s in the laonui riding, £475 Is 9d in the Mangaone riding and £541 9s 4d in the !nzheibert riding. The following property transfers were granted: —Mangaone riding: Mrs. B. J. Clark to C. E. Gore, 17 acres, 3 roods, 13.5 perches; 9 acres, 2 roods, 17.5 perches; Mrs. Clark to Win. Goie, 18 acres, 20.1 perches; Mrs. Clark N. and L. Core, 9 acres, 2 roods, 17.5 perches; P. and M. Anderson to J. O. and S. E. Anderson, 19 acres, 32 perches. Taonui riding: E. J. Herrick to K. M. Duncan, 306 acres, 2 roods, 15 perches, and 43 4acres, 3 roods, 22 perches; E. J. Herrick to Mrs. Duncan. 22 acres; W. F. Bottckcr (Est. J. Gillespie) to It. M. Fitzgerald, 31 acres, 1 rood, 36.1 perches, and 130 acres, 2 roods, 11.2 perches. Fitzherbert riding: Est. J .0. Batchelar to Massey Agricultural College, 68 acres, 2 roods, 10 perches.
