Juvenile Swimming Champions Will Compete at Centra!

‘•MOST SUITABLE BATHS IN PALMERSTON NORTH” In all probability the intermediate and junior national swimming eliampion, ships will be held in the Central School swimming baths next January, according to arrangements made at the meeting of the school committee last evening. A deputation from the Manawatu Swimming Centre, which it staging the fixture, waited on the meeting, and complete unanimity was reached.

The deputation consisted of Messrs W. C. Nichols, president of the centre, and W. Eyre, secretary. The chairman of the committee, Mr W. G. Black, said that representatives of the Manawatu Swimming Centre had waited on him and explained the desire of the centre to use the Centra! baths. The natural venue would have been the municipal baths, but the City Council had expressed its unwillingness to make the requisite 'alterations and additions to the seating accommodation. The alternative would be to transfer the championships to Fcildirig, unless the Central pool, the only other suitable baths in the city, could be obtained. Personally, said Mr Black, lie had felt that everything should be done to welcome the championships to Central. The only alterations required would be tho erection of additional seating that might be required, and it was suggested that the committee should furnish such seats ns might be permanent. Financial adjustments would also have to be made to compensate the committee for loss of Tcvenuc during tho period, as weli as having a share in the takings.

Mr Nichols said it was recognised that tho Central baths were undoubtedly the best in the city to-day for championship purposes. If they had anything like a successful season for the three-day fixture the financial returns would be satisfactory. Entrants would como from tho w'hole of the Dominion, and the tournament would be of a very .high standard. Lindsay, the Olympic representative, would be in attendance, although the competitions would bo for juniors and intermediates only. Other features would make the carnival something unique for Palmerston North.

Mr E. Bary, principal, said he was thoroughly in accord with the proposal. Use of the baths was finally granted, subject to the privileges of the regular patrons of tho baths being safeguarded. Tho school committee will erect certain seating accommodation of a permanent nature, at its own cost, while the centre will have the right to erect further seats if -required.
