A Variety of Types

To tho Editor Sir, —In a majestic institution such as our Public Hospital, with all its skilled officers and trained nurses, who are the essence of kindness and attention in the discharge of their duties to tlie inmates, the patients’ attention is forcibly drawn to the different types of visitors who parade -around the • arious wards, as for instance, those who, actuated by a spirit of humanitarian instinct, bring their gifts or offerings, and having donated them, indulge in a pleasant remark to each patient and immediately create a cheerful atmosphere. Next we have u peculiar type, whose outstanding feature appears to be that they are obsessed with a spirit of inquisitiveness, coupled with a catechism of very personal remarks which is most objectionable to their victims; however, they cut no ice. Again another class, whe pass slowly, as if they were doing

sentry-go —and, finally, a small section who state that they arc interested only in our Spiritual welfare, and arc anxious to expound on that same subject if permitted to do so, but as a few sceptics, or hardened characters are distributed around in tho various beds, awaiting a debate on theology, these do not create a. profound impression. In conclusion one could write a book on the idiosyncracies or foibles of the - arious patients as revealed to us during our sojourn in this magnificent Institution. I am, etc., H. J. CANTON, Palmerston North, November 14th.
