SOUTHLAND GETS RUGBY LESSON

Wellington Run Out Winners by 38 to 11 HOME TEAM TOO FAST AND CLEVER Per Press Association WELLINGTON, Last Night. The touring Southland Rugby team was defeated by Wellington at Athletic Park to-day. The game was very evenly contested in the first spell, when the visitors played with a strong wind and a bright sun behind them; but once Wellington had these conditions iu their favour they opened up the play, and with backs and forwards combining in fast passing rushes, they ran the Southerners off their legs, and notched a comfortable margin of points in their favour. Southland fought doggedly, their forwards-particularly playing an honest game, but they wero not equal to the class of the victors. Southland’s reputation for good forward play was thoroughly maintained. They set Wellington a task greater than auy home side has had to answer this season, but tactical superiority proved a strong factor iu Wellington’s favour. Thcy were content to play Southland more or less at their own game in the first spell, which ended 3-all, but after turning Tound, Wellington commenced to develop their characteristic typo of open game, and from tho interval there was Tcally only one team in it. Southland saw sufficient of tho ball to havo held their own with Wellington, but their movements lacked design and finish, while their handling was poor. In tho second spell, with Wellington colling the tune, Southland’s defence fell away, and as well as being outgencrallcd, they were outmanoeuvred by the speed of the Wellington backs. Berry scored the opening try for Southland, but Killeen soon, equalised for Wellington, outpacing the Southland defence aftor Lilburne had shortpunted.with a positional kick. There was no further scoring until the second spell, wheu Killeen, again showed exceptional speed to beat the Southland backs in a race for the ball. Fuller goaled. Fuller then rounded off a Wellington passing movement by scoring and converting. Tries were added in quick succession by Dellabarca and Robins, Fuller converting both. Kilby then opened up a nice movement for Dcllabarca to score ao-ain, and Reid touched down, from a forward rush, Fuller converting both tries. Sharp kicked a penalty for Southland, which Robins followed up with a good try in tho corner after all tho Wellington backs had handled, Fuller again converting. Tho final try went to Southland wheu a penalty kick by Sharpo hit an upright and rebounded into play, and George touched down in a handy position, Sharpo converting.
