U.S.A. National Tennis Tournament Opens
RESULTS OF DOUBLES PLAY United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 8.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 22. At Brookline the w-eather c.oaK.u lato on Tuesday and competitors in the United States tennis doubles championship took tho courts. Fred Perry and Frank Wildo (Britain) defeated Bowden and Armand Bruenoau (Now York) G—4, 6—o, 6 —4; Vines and Gledhill (U.S.A.) beat J. M. Farrin and Gerald Smith (a Navy team) G—4, G—l, G—3; Allison and vanßyn (U.S.A.) beat E. B. Benedict and D. P. Robinson (Boston) G—l, 6—l, G—l. Turnbull and Quist (Australia) defeated tho Turner brothers, local players, in an uninteresting match, tho Australians' victory being indicaseu from tho very first, although one of the Americans had an exceptionally vigorous service which troubled Quist, his returns being almost uniformly defensive. The Australians ran up a 2—l lead by breaking through the Americans’ service in the first set anu ran out in that set by again finding the second brother’s weaker aervico easy in tho seventh game. Tho second set was almost a replica of tho first, save that the break in the Americans’ service camo in tho fifth game, giving the Australians a 3 —2 lead. Turnbull was extraordinarily steady, his volleying being superb. Quist, whoso overhead gamo had accounted for tho majority of tho Australians’ ten placement aces in tho first set, became a little erratic in the seventh game, which tho Americans won to love, but ho qeJCKIy steadied. The Australians clinched the set upon a break in tho Americansservice in tho ninth game. Turnbull and Quist ran up a 3 —o lead in the third set, but iu the next two games they netted and outed, Turnbull, in fact, almost losing his service in the fifth game, being 15—40, but recovering to win the gamo and the next two games, making no less than six placement accs of the 14 points it took to win them.
The results was: Quist and Turnbull defeated R. S. and A. T. Turner, C —2, o—3jo—3j 6 —l. Crawford and McGrath won by default from T. Flynn (Long Island) and J. Ray but being badly in need of practice played .informally with various club members to-day. No Play at Forest Hills NEW YORK, Aug. 22. Rain at Forest Hills further postponed play in the women’s national singles championship to-day.
