Bulls W.I. Celebrates Second Birthday
There was,a record attendance ot between three and four hundred. at tho second birthday of tho Bulls W.I. which was very happily celebrated at the Town Hall on Monday afternoon. The hall presented a delightful appcaranco canopied in coloured streamers and with many novol decorations, which had been arranged for tho Tennis Club ball. The president, Mrs F. Balfe, extended a gracious welcome to tho visitors, thcro being representatives of tho following institutes pre-sent:—-Awahuri, Glen Oroun, .Makino, Marion Junction, Rongotca, Sanson, and Taikorea. Miss Grant, a member of the Dominion executive, was. also present, and referred briefly to recent developments in tho movement. Mrs Balf made feeling rofcronco to the passing of Mrs McLennan, a valued member of Halcombe W. 1., and apologised for the absence of Ilalcombo representatives. A most interesting programme was prosontod which included musical monologues by Mrs Churchill, several folk dances, a gavotte and an amusing playetto entitled “Oh, Mr Smytiic! ”by local members. The various items were most enthusiastically received. Afternoon tea provided a pleasing break in proceedings, and tho handsome two-tiered cako surmounted by two candles, which had been mado by Mcsdamcs Kalfo and 11. Edwards and iced by Mrs Balfe, was* cut by the oldest member, Mrs Brough-1 ton, senr., with the usual pleasing coremony of candle lighting. Birthday greetings and good, wishes, also thanks for kindly hospitality were conveyed by representatives of various institutes. Tho competition for a carnival hat (hand-made) created much interest,V particularly as the competitors were required to wear their hats during the afternoon. The judges, Mrs Eoy Scott and Miss Grant, made tho following awards:—Prettiest hat, Miss Balfe 1, Miss Dalziol 2, Mrs Broughton, senr., 3; most original, Miss lona Ellery 3, Miss Moto Ivingi 2, Mrs W. Homes 3. Mrs Balfe donated tho prizes. A basket mado by Mrs Balfe was won by Mrs Toms, tho number of peas in the bottle being 219. There was a nice collection of handcrafts on viow, al hall-runner, the artistic work of Mrs Huddlestone, evoking much admiration. The singing of “Comrades and Friends’ and tho National Anthem concluded a memorable gathering.
