North Island Schools’ Soccer Tournament

WELLINGTON WALK AWAY FROM WANGANUI The North. Island secondary schools’ soccer tourney was commenced at North Street Park yesterday afternoon under far from favourable conditions.' Teams are present from various parts of the Island, and with such an invasion of the city by juvenile enthusiasts of the code, together with their respective coaches, thero could not but be a spirit of keen but amicable rivalry manifest at the park. Most of the boys had arrived overnight or yesterday morning, and there was a good attendance at the initial games of the series in the aftornoon. Both games played were between Wellington and Wanganui, in the senior and junior divisions, Wellington annexing the honours in both cases by an easy margin. Wellington seniors, taking advantage of a weakened opposition, had no difficulty in compiling a score that was almost foreign to tho code, for 16 to nil was the tune of their victory. Not content with the half-time margin of 7-0, they went on to greater heights after tho division to more than double tbo tally. Considering the mud arena in which tho game unfortunately was staged, the performance of Wellington was certainly creditable. They certainly showed up well, although Wanganui fielded a number of young players. Wellington put on four goals in the first 10 minutes, and by the interval Quirke (3), McNaughton (2), Hatchard and Mackie had all found their mark. Wanganui could do no better after the resumption, although they put up a plucky fight, and did their utmost to stay the account. Quirke (3), Mackie (2), Thomas, MeNaugliton, Mason and Cox all had a turn at keeping tho adding machine busy. Mr F. W. Ivey refereed. Wanganui juniors could do little better, although they kept a sterner eye on the points margin. In this game, in which Mr J. S. Jenkinson held .the whistle, tho scorers were Yeoman (3), Gates (2), Gcndall and Kelly,, making Wellington’s tally up to tho respectable figure of 7-0. The tourney continues to-day, tomorrow and Friday, while to-night the .Association’s annual meeting eventuates.
