Milk Grading Scheme

CRITICISM AT PAPATAWA “I never remombor a time when the dairy industry was more confused about regulations,” stated Mi J. G. Brechin, secretary of the Papatawa Dairy Company, at the annual meeting of shareholders on Saturday. “If the milk grading regulations, which aro voluminous, aro enforced, there will be more unnecessary expense for farmers,’’ he added. "It will cost tho Papatawa company alone about £3O. The curd test, which tho department of Agriculture demands, conveys a lot to tho factory manager, but very little .to the supplier. Tho department wants us to use both at the same time. This, is quite unnecessary, and in my opinion, is just pig-headedness on the part of tho department. The department is opposed by responsible factory managers and scientists, and the Minister is in a quandary.”

“As you aro awaro the requests of tho deputation which waited on the Minister to convey tho resolution passed at the N.B.A. conference has had no effect in amending the regulations to provide for tho use of either one of the three tests for grading milk for cheese-making,” stated a letter from the Federation of Taranaki Co-opera-tive Dairy Factories. “Tho companies here who have been pressing for this reform have decided that the only course now open is to present a petition to Parliament. We are preparing this petition, and will shortly forward it so that as many signatures as possible can be obtained. Wo have not ceased our efforts to have the regulations amended.” The Bush Dairy Companies * Association advised thast a joint, meeting of dairy factory directors from the mem-, bers of the association, and also the Southern Hawke’s Bay Association would be held in Woodvillo on Friday to discuss milk grading and tho question of tests. The member for the district, Hon. E. A. Ransom, M.P., wa? being invited to attend.
