Y.M.C.A. Notes

(By "Algy.”) Once again looking through the open doors of the Association, we see all classes from tho seniors to the Saturday morning boys and girls, working at fevorisli heat preparing for tho event of the year, the Annual Gymnastic Display, which is to be held in October. Pyramid squads, tumbling squads, apparatus squads, club and wand squads, gymnastic dancing squads, and even mixed callisthenic squads, aro all working with their eyes fixed on three figures: 13th, 14th, and 16th of October. The Inter-House basketball competition is finished in the ladies’ section, and our congratulations are duo to tho Hosiery Factory A team, who have again won tho competition by a good margin, with P.D.C. "A” second. In the men’s section, P.D.C. arc leading Hopwood Hardware by two points, and as both teams have to meet once more, an exciting game is promised. In keeping with the end of tho basketball season, our basketball dinner is being held in Collinson and Cunninghame’s tearooms on the 30th. instant. After the dinner, tho Wanganui Bops, are playing ouir Gym.. Reps, in the gymnasium. May wo remind all inter-house teams that an item must be forthcoming from each team for the dinner.

In the Gym. Competition, Big Tree under tho captaincy of C. AlcAlinn, have run out the winners, and the "knockout” competition is nearing the stage of completion. Tho Debating Club is still holding its fortnightly sessions in the lounge, and besides tho three debates held during tho month, an address was given by Dr. Smith of tho Boys’ High School, on "Technocracy.”

Tho Optimists’ Club is continuing to flourish, and has increased its membership to 38. Tho attendance at the weekly luncheons has been 37 as compared with 27 last year. Excellent speakers have been secured at our luncheons, whose subjects have been both interesting and instructive. I would urge the Optimitsts not to argue with the Sheriff after they have been lined, as tho Sheriff complains about his dinner getting cold. That is certainly one way of getting our own back. On July 28, a Parents’ Night was held for the parents of the High School boys, when an excellent programme was given by tho High Y Club, Misses M. Day and M. Penketh, Messrs Pullyn, Wright, Flowers and Bottle, to which performers we offer our grateful appreciation for their services. Mr J. A. Grant gave an address to the assembled gathering, and tho only regret we have is that there were not more parents at this special function on their behalf. Again the Ladies’ Auxiliary volunteered their generous services and spread a. splendid supper. AVo also tender our thanks to Mrs Boon for playing all accompaniments and to Mr Welwyn who led the community singing. The boys’ soccer team travelled to Wanganui recently to play tho Wanganui team at soccer. Our team were victorious by two goals to nil, and a very splendid day was spent as guosts of the AVanganui Association. This Association. appreciates very much tho assistance given by Messrs J. A. Grant, ’ J. C. Young, and J. McAllen, who lent their cars in transporting tho team. A Rugby football team is visiting us from Wellington Y.M.O.A. on the 23rd., so X urge all footballers to got into serious training, as wo are meeting a strong side. Tho Hcxathlon Athletic Contest is finished, and some fine performances were recorded. In the high jump, Dave Ritchie cleared 4ft. 9Aim; George Marshall, in the hop, step and jump, made 24ft lliu.; whilo in the fence vault, Georgo Marshall, Bill Nicholls, Bill Hadfield, Kelvin Wiggins and Spencer Howard cleared the bar at 7ft. In the bar snap, Ernie Parker took tho lead with a jump of 7ft lOin. In the higu jump, Hewitt Billons showed us a new stylo by clearing the bar head first, and landing on "his shoulders on the other side. AVe don 't know whether he was testing a new shock absorbor, or whether he has cast iron shoulders, but ho certainly punished the mat. During the month a team from the Tenekoit Club mot a team from 'the Busifness Men ; s class, at Tenekoit. ® match resulted in 2S games all. The Tenekoit Club won on sets, with 4 sets to 3. The Business Men are now training hard for tho return game. AVo might mention in passing that the two ‘‘ cracks” of tho Business Men’s class, ‘‘ Brownie” and ‘‘Chum,” won their match, 6-1, <3—l, 6-2. Their opponents do not wish their names to bo disclosed, but I believe that they have gone into secret training. On Dit: That— Big Tree are hoping to figure in a double feature by winning the “Knockout” competition, too. If they do, “Biff” has promised a double shout to the pictures. It is a credit to this team that they have not had to play an cinorgoncy once during tho season. Other teams would have clone well to have followed tlieir example. Since wrestling has started in t e Gym., some “Ike Robins” have been discovered in the Employed Boys’ class. “Chum” and “Keith” are deadly rivals in the game of tenekoit, and every Monday and Thursday night at five to five they commence their duel. Keith is still very confident that he will win sometimes, but “Chum” says he ia going to put one arm in a slmg and still win. The High Y Choir sing very well, wit are still footlight shy. They all want to bo in tho back row. Grandpa has discovered ho has a fine tenor voice, and improvises some very doubtful parts. “Buster” and a few.moro players in the scratch games, have got the rules of basketball hopelessly mixed up with the rules of baseball, American football, Rugby and Soccer. _ In fact, it is rumoured that tho Physical Birector has had to enlighten them. “Paddy” with some large breaks staved off a keen assault by ‘‘Biff” in the final of the ten-minute billiard tournament. “Paddy” won by 69 to 18. The Physical Director has no trouble in getting members along to the mixed callisthenics practises. This augers well for the success of the combined Red and Blue triangles at New Ply--1 mouth. Melbourne Y-MJI.A, put up a greai;

record during June, when the/ raised £11,163 in 19 days, for their Jubilee fund. Congratulatione to the Melbourne Association. The Melbourne Association report that a largo part of this successful campaign, was due to the great fillip, and the practical support given it by the Melbourne branch of the Eotary Club. In a Tocent game of basketball, two esteemed members of the Leareds Corps became rather hot-headed toward each other. —I wonder why? “Strangler” Tommy and “Whiskers” Foxy aTO preparing for a preliminary bout at the next wrestling match. They even try the short arm scissors while playing basketball. The Boys’ Work Director wishes to thank those members of tho Leareds Corps, C. McMdnn, C. Bumble, K. Burae, 0 Good John, and G. Griggs, who were of invaluable assistance in tho running of the Hoxathlon Contest. Especially does he thank C. McMinn and C. Bumble, who gave, up every class night in assisting with the judging and the taking of records for the contest. The Central Y.M.C.A., London, is endeavouring to raise £10)500 as a birthday gift. In a humorous way they publish some of the letters they expect to receive: “Dear Guv.— The enclosed postal order means five bob to your fund, and lsd for tbe Postmaster General. That's two rascals accounted for,-—Yours X.Y.Z. ■ . 11 Dear Cent ymea,—-T eh close a guinea for the Birthday Fund. This, ye ken, is the amount I have saved my own pocket by borrowing a cigarette from another laddie on 420 occasions, —Yours thrifty, Sandy McNab.” 11 Gentlemen, —Wc are instructed by our client, Mr Percival Bubblesqueak, to inform you that ho wishes to contribute £IOO to your Birthday Fund. Having deducted our legal charges for carrying out these instructions on his behalf, we herewith enclose cheque for £8 13s 4d.—Yours truly, Smith, Smith, Smith and, Smith, Solicitors*”
