Social Functions of Last Week

On Friday last a most successful flag bridge evening was conducted by tSc Manawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club in the pavilion, this.being one of the series of card evenings which have been a feature of tho club's social activities during the winter.. Eight tables were engagod and at the conclusion of play those at the winning table were Mrs. E. Sim, Miss Fitzberald and Mr. J. B. Gerrand. The hostesses wero Mesdames Gerrand and King. During the evening tho president (Mr. Gerrand) reminded members of tho annual meeting of the club and announced that another flag bridge evening would be held the last week in September. There was an excellent attendance at tho fortnightly old-time dance held in the Takaro Church hall last week. Popular music, together with an excellent floor, contributed to a most successful and happy ovening. The first stage oT a series of waltzing competitions resulted in Mr. S. Wilson and Miss P. Watts, Mr. Hands and Miss R. Schliorike, and Mr. Wollerman and Miss F. Watts receiving the most votes. The lucky Gay Gordons was won by, Mr. Hammond and Miss F. Watts, and. Mr. and Mrs. McKenna wore the winners or the Monte Carlo waltz. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies' ■ committee. An extra played by Mrs. Wollerman wa3 enthusiastically ■ oncored. Mr. Barkwith ably carried out the duties of M.C.
