Dealing with the physical and mental development of , the child from birth till the eleventh year, Professor W. 11. Gould, at a recent meeting of the Upper Hutt branch of the Plunket Society, stressed the noceessity for allowing the child to develop in accordance with his nature. “The child is not a little adult, physically, mentally or morally,” lie said, “and must not be treated as such.”

The first year was the pre-social period, in which the forming of regular habits was imperative. The first to tlic third year of flic child’s life was described as the period of initiative socialisation, during which the child became conscious of himself and imitated the bohavour of those around him. From, the third to the seventh year the child strengthened his personality, and in consequence manifested a marked assertiveness. Children should be given toys which they could manipulate rather than the finished mechanical toy, continued the speaker. It was in this connection that tho kindergarten was of such inestimable valuc ; for there tho child learned through experience.
