Canterbury Potato Market Unstable
VERY LITTLE BUSINESS REPORTED Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. There is not much business passing in the potato market. The steady arrival of shipments in Auckland has apparently kept that market very well supplied and there is no firmness in tho demand. July arrivals still to reach Auckland promise little chance of the market recovering. The Waimarino left this week, carrying a shipment of approximately 4000 sacks from Lyttelton and Timaru combined. The Wingatui will load on Monday and Tuesday, and tho Waipiata leaves for Auckland at the end of tho month, taking potatoes from the Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru and Lyttelton. The latter’s shipment is expected to be a heavy one. The quotation, f.o.b, 5.1., for prompt is £5 5/-, equivalent to about £4 10/- on the trucks to farmers. Generally tho position is unstable. There is no movement in any other section of the market. Tho small seeds business is showing life, inasmuch as tho inquiry from the North Island is greater for ryegrass, cocksfoot and clovers, but no business has passed yet.
