In spite Of the unseasonable weather conditions which prevailed, a very large crowd of visitors spent the New Year holidays at Manawatu Heads. From an early hour on New Year’s Day the Beach road contained an endless stream of motor vehicles of all descriptions. During the day a sports meeting on the sands was held under the auspices of the Foxton Beach Improvement Committee, the various events drawing large entries and an enthusiastic attendance of spectators. In spite of the high wind wdiich was blowing, an aeroplane, flying for hire, was kept continually in the air by peoplo anxious for a trip aloft, while bathing on the ocean beach and also on tho river foreshore was indulged in, although a large proportion of the young ladies preferred to promenade in their . fashionable Lido pyjamas. Although conditions were anything but ideal, the holiday spirit prevailed and young and old alike seemed to enjoy themselves. A “Whoopee’ night, held at the Beach hall in connection with the social activities of tho Foxton Surf and Life-Saving Club, was largely attended in the evening, when a very enjoyable time was spent. Many campers took advantage of the sheltered nooks in the camping ground, whero a large number of tents of various colours and shapes were to be seen. The weather on both Saturday and Sunday, although fine, was again very boisterous and greatly marred the enjoyment of the holiday-makers.
