IMPROVING HEMP MANUFACTURE Tho specially constructed flax stripper which landed at Wellington from England last week arrived in Eoxton on Wednesday. The machinery, which has keen sent to the Dominion by Messrs. Richard Garrett and Son, Ltd., of Lciston, England, is under the care of Mr. C. M. Plane, the company’s engineer, who arrived from Home last week by the Rangitanc. Immediately after the holidays Mr. Plane will- assemble the plant at Messrs. A. Ross. Rough and Co.’s local mill, where extensive tests are to bo carried out in the presence of millers, representatives of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture and representatives of tho Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It is understood that the stripper is somewhat similar to those used in Kenya Colony and tho West Indies for tho dressing of sisal. Much interest Is likely to be taken in tho experiments, which if successful are expected to assist greatly in eliminating waste in the manufacture of hemp, and at tho the same time to produce a better grade of fibre. BOWLING On the Foxton. green on AVednesday a match for the Nyo Ferns resulted in tho defeat of tho holders, Robinson, Grotty, Heppner and Hinds (s.), by Stevenson, Trueman, AVarwick and Nye (s.), 24—21. The second round of the Triangular Shield contest will be played at Shannon on AA’cdncsday next. A BIG JOB At the last meeting of tho Foxton Borough Council the waterworks foreman (Mr. AV. D, Neville) reported that tho large septic tank.into which the whole of tho borough sewerage system is drained had become blocked and was not functioning properly. The council discussed tho question at some length, the seriousness of the question from a health point of view being emphasised. Authorisation for the work of clearing and cleaning the tank was given and a start on tho work has now been made, with tho assistance of men employed under the No. '5 scheme. Owing to tho difficulty being experienced in discharging tho accumulation of sand and rubbish it is estimated that the work will take six months to complete. When tho job was commenced it was found that the floor of tho tank was covered with sand to a depth of over lour feet. This will all havo to be removed by way of a small manhole, as will an enormous quantity of rubbish which extremely thoughtless and careless peoplo have consigned to the sewers instead of the refuse dump. A CHRISTMAS TREAT A few days before Christmas members of the Presbyterian Sunday school classes spent a very happy time at the manse, where they were royally entertained by Rev. Mr Preston and Mrs. Preston. “Father Christmas” was present and distributed gifts from a wellstocked Christmas tree. Games were played and afternoon tea was served before tho children dispersed.
