China Sends Further Note to League
TALK OF DEFENDING CHINCHOW United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Friday, 10.0 p.m. SHANGHAI, Dec. 31. The Chinese continued the evacuation of Chinehow, Manchuria’s provincial walled capital, to-day as the Japanese pushed forward on two fronts. Tho Chinese defences crumbled in disorder before the superior equipment and tactics of the invaders. Private messages from Chinehow state that residents have devised a queer air raid warning system, including bell ringing, factory whistling and tho banging of dishpans, whereupon tho ■people scurry to cover. Eugene Chen, China’s new firebrand Foreign Minister, has started well, it is stated. Upon the new Government’s assumption of office to-morrow orders will be issued to Marshal Chang Hsuch Liang, former Manchurian Governor, to hold Chinehow at all costs. China to-day dispatched to the League of Nations vigorous protests regarding the Chinehow happenings, declaring that Japan’s activities constituted a serious aggravation, and requesting the League to instruct Japan to refrain from further aggressions.
