Egypt's Golden Hoard
SMUGGLERS ACTIVE. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Friday, 8.20 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 31. The Daily Mail’s Cairo correspondent says that tho high price of gold in Europe is tempting gold hoarders to sell. Metal speculators are resorting to various devices to evade the Government prohibition of export and risking severe penalties. The most successful gold smuggling convoys have traversed the Sinai desert with camels and thence through Palestine and Syria whence gold is shipped to France. Vigilance camel corps traversing the desert tracks have rendered this method hazardous. The corps made several big hauls. It is estimated there is ten to 15 millions sterling worth of gold in Egypt, mostly in possession of the peasants.
